  • Duration: 4 Days
  • Location: Coonabarabran
  • Product code: XMASJUL19

Day 1 –  Friday

Siding Spring in the winter is chilly and the perfect place to enjoy the Christmas Spirit of Yuletide

Make your own way to Siding Spring Observatory to meet the group at 3.30pm for some tips about residing alongside a working scientific facility.  After settling into your room, we’ll head up to the highest point on the mountain to watch the sunset, and feel the last warm rays of the day.  Make sure you bring your camera enjoy  Australia’s first Dark Sky Park as true darkness descends and nocturnal animals pop out. A warming dinner awaits you in the astronomers' lodge. (D)

Day 2 – Saturday

We start the day with breakfast followed by a behind-the-scenes tour of the AAT and Schmidt telescopes. During this two-hour walking tour on the mountain, you'll learn what amazing science is taking place on this site, every day. Lunch will be served at the conclusion of your tour.

This afternoon we prepare a picnic lunch for you and invite you for a self-led tour of Sandstone Caves. Walk in the footsteps of the Gamilaroi people along the short Sandstone Caves walking track in Pilliga Nature Reserve. You’ll pass through a scenic forest to the impressive sandstone hills, with some containing ancient Aboriginal rock engravings.

We'll visit Pillaga Pottery for dinner (included).  (B, L, D)

Day 3 – Sunday

Today is a day for a scenic drive starting on the western side of the WNP.  We commence with a visit to the Emu Logic farm. It's quite an impressive site, seeing so many of this iconic bird in one place. From here, we head north to the Pilliga Discovery Centre to learn about this area of state forest.

Dandry Gorge is next on the list and the perfect spot for a picnic lunch. The Pilliga National Park is home to the Sculpture in the Scrub, and our Discovery Ranger will guide us through the area. Here, five people took three stones and two used metals to create a unique bush artwork that reflects the long history of the area. Finally, we return to the lodge in preparation for a warming Christmas celebration - keep your eyes peeled for Santa as we stargaze tonight. (B, L, D)
